Deficit Reduction is Not Like Setting Prices at Wal-Mart

I really want to get $4 trillion. I think it’s critical.

That’s Senator Kent Conrad, talking about his deficit reduction plan.  Uh, Conrad does understand that each dollar in that plan has the same value, and that there’s essentially no difference between $3.9 and $4 trillion, right? Shouldn’t policy be based on what we can and can’t afford to cut rather than on what can be described in big round numbers? Sigh.
